Self-Exclusion: How to Take a Stronger Break from Gambling

Understand the difference between time-outs and self-exclusion, where to start and why state rules and operator programs matter.

Independent affiliate publication, not William Hill, Caesars or an operator account portal. Eligibility and services vary by jurisdiction.

What self-exclusion means

Self-exclusion is a formal protective step that can restrict participation in specified gambling products or venues for a chosen or prescribed period. The scope, minimum duration, re-entry process and consequences of attempting to gamble during exclusion differ by jurisdiction and program.

Self-exclusion is more than deleting an app or unsubscribing from marketing. It normally requires enrollment through an operator, regulator or an authorized program.

Time-out versus self-exclusion

Time-out or cooling-off: A temporary break, sometimes implemented within the operator's account tools.

Self-exclusion: Often a more formal and longer-lasting restriction. Some state schemes reach multiple licensed operators, while operator-only restrictions may have a narrower scope. Verify the exact rules before relying on coverage.

Steps to take

  1. Identify the operators, products and jurisdictions where you currently gamble.
  2. Open the regulator's official responsible-gambling or self-exclusion page.
  3. Read the program scope, duration, identity requirements and any renewal or reinstatement rules.
  4. Complete enrollment through the official channel and retain confirmation.
  5. Consider additional controls, such as financial blocks, marketing opt-outs and support from trusted people.

Help and follow-through

Self-exclusion can be useful, but it is not a substitute for support if gambling is harming your life. The National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-MY-RESET, can connect people with resources. If you are unsure whether exclusion applies to an operator, ask that operator or the applicable regulator—not an unrelated affiliate publisher.
